Matt’s the newest writer over here. After his first week we caught up to get to know him a little better.

What are you up to at outré creative?

Writing. Editing. Proofreading. If it involves words, I make it nicer to read.

And before you joined the team? Anything interesting?

I specialise in decoding highly regulated information and making it easy to understand. But I was also a food and music journalist for a while. It was a fantastic experience and the free grub didn’t hurt – but the late nights catch up with you in the end.

Are you still into food and music now?

Absolutely. Even more so now that it’s not my job anymore. I still go to plenty of gigs, but it’s more like once a month these days rather than a few times a week. I also love cooking, and not having to hammer out an article about it afterwards is definitely easier on the digestion.

What are you reading right now?

I’ve just finished volume one of The Familiar by Mark Z. Danielewski.

He’s an interesting writer but his style can be disorienting for a newcomer. You have to stick with it, and you’ll get into the flow.

He plays with layout, colour, and typography in his books to disrupt expectations and enhance stories – so designers will find a lot to enjoy in his books, beyond the words alone.

House of Leaves is a good starting point for anyone who’s interested.

What’s on your bucket list?

I have an agreement with a friend that we’ll do a coast-to-coast road trip across the United States at some point. Eating all the BBQ in our path.

I realise we’ve returned to talking about food, and I’m not a glutton, I promise. I just know good food when I see (eat) it.

What is your favourite word?

‘Tube’. It’s not onomatopoeia, but when you say it, it sounds exactly like what it is. Is there a word for that? Anyway, go on, try it!

Tube.

Tube.

Right… moving on. Quickly.

What do you expect from the next few months at outré creative?

I expect to be busy!

The pace is always fast here, but that’s a good thing. There are some great projects coming up with some fantastic clients, and I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in.

Project? Deadline? Coffee?

Let’s have a chat.
